The Oratorical Contest has been postponed until March 10th, it will be held at the Sunrise Optimist Building.

The Voluntary Action Committee (VAC) is gearing up for their annual computer re-distribution March 9th and 10th, and the
Downtown Optimist Club needs a few members to help out. Please see Rick McKernan if you can lend a hand.
Rock Bridge Memorial Park will have an anniversary luncheon April 4th around 12:30pm at Bennigans.
This Thursday is Downtown Optimist Club night at the Food Bank.

PROGRAM: Today Al Buchanan talked about The Boone County Relay for Life. This group raises money for cancer research, advocacy and patient services. Last year the relay raised $167,000. This year’s relay will be June 8th and 9th and they would like to have a

MYSTERY PERSON: We had more of Spence Turner’s creative math. This week Spence added 1 and 9 (19th of Feb.) to get 10; he then awarded next week’s free lunch to Jim Yankee for being the 10th person to shake his hand.
TAIL TWISTER: Steve Henderson told us of a new bumper sticker, it says ‘Run Hillary Run’, Democrats put it on the back of their car and Republicans put it on the front.

The Great Pork Chili Cook-Off will be held this Wednesday the 21st at 6:00pm at the Holiday Inn Select. Our own Steve Henderson will be competing. If he wins the People’s Choice Prize he will donate $200 of the $250 prize money to the club. All you have to do is show up; pay the $10 admission and vote for Steve.
The 40 Under 40 Mixer will be held this Wednesday the 21st at Kliks Bar and Grill, 205 North Tenth Street from 4:30-6:30.

Birthdays and Anniversaries: Happy Birthday to Ellis Havard!!
PROGRAM: Marianne Catanho presented this week’s program. Marianne is a sophomore at Mizzou and a friend of Valerie Goodin. Marianne spoke about the work she is involved in back in her home of Brazil. Marianne is part of group that works to eliminate some of the poor conditions that many in Brazil are subjected to. Specifically the group has worked to improve the sanitation system as well as working to improve the lives and futures of Brazil’s children. Keep up the good work, Marianne; the Downtown Optimists are behind you!

GUESTS: Rick McKernan was joined by a small detail today Karen Boyajy from the Journalism School, Ben Warner from MBS Textbooks and Dr Tom Berger who helps veterans adjust from life in the military to life as a civilian.
Greg Schneider was joined by his wife Colleen.
MYSTERY PERSON: Bo Bossaller was our mystery guest he awarded next weeks free lunch to Carl Scott because he is such a swell guy and he was the second member to shake hands with Bo.

GREETER: Lisa Eimers was our greeter today; Lisa is originally from up State New York. Lisa has two children and works as the development director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri.
PROGRAM: Today’s program was presented by Chris Gervino of KOMU TV. Appropriately Chris spoke about what’s going on with local sports. Chris spoke highly of Mizzou Head Basketball Coach Mike Anderson and the great things to come from the Mizzou men’s basketball team in the years to come.
In addition to Chris Gervino we had new member installations today. Greg Schneider sponsored his son Nick Schneider, Kerry Bramon sponsored Scott Duncan and Christine White sponsored Lisa Eimers. Welcome to the club!!!!!!

GUESTS: Valerie Goodin brought Marianne Catanho, a transfer student in engineering at Mizzou. Marianne has just arrived from Olinda, Brazil.

MYSTERY PERSON: After a very creative and less than accurate way of counting the letters in the word ‘Bears’ Spence awarded next week’s free lunch to Al Jones.
TAIL TWISTER: Steve Henderson is back from Argentina. He brought his jokes back, too. We are anxious to hear when he will be taking another trip.

Program: Christine White introduced today’s speaker, Officer John Warner of the Columbia Police Department. Officer Warner is the School Resource Officer (SRO) for West Junior High School. Officer Warner shared many valuable ideas with regards to helping kids avoid poor choices in life. Officer Warner pointed out that teenagers do not listen; they do not do as parents tell them.
