**The club will be manning the phones of the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon Monday September 3rd from 11am-1pm, we need 12 volunteers. Please see Carl Scott to volunteer or sign your name to the sign up sheets at the weekly luncheon.
**The Department of Natural Resources will conduct a meeting concerning park operations at RBMSP at 7 p.m. on August 27 at the Gilbert Shelter House. All Optimist Club members and friends are invited. We may also have an opportunity to discuss things we would like to have there. We very much need a building such as a visitor center at the park. If you've ever been there when a storm comes up suddenly, you know that there isn't any place to go to get out of the storm. While visitors are in the building we would be able to show them the many fascinating things there are to see and do at the park. We believe we would need 2 medium size classrooms to accommodate present classes, and an auditorium to accommodate large groups. The classrooms would be used by both young and old for meetings that are currently held there, as well as new classes that will be needed in the future. The auditorium would be used to show the interior of the cave to people who are unable to see it in person, and to all visitors during times when the cave is closed. Large groups who come to hear speakers talk about the geology of the earth in general, and the park would also use it in particular. Programs on streams and rivers would also be provided there. There is no end to the possibilities that could be provided to large audiences in the auditorium.
We would also like to have a small library for people to enjoy, and a small gift shop where people could buy mementos to take home after their visit to the park, and a small coffee shop where people could buy coffee or hot chocolate in cold weather or cool drinks in the summertime. Sandwiches should be available for people who are tired and hungry after walking the trails.
We would like to have space for exhibits of things to see and do while at the park. And an information desk where questions will be answered and suggestions made for the many groups who appear at the park. If possible, we would also like to have a deck around the building for telescope viewing of the sky and woods.
You might have other suggestions for our park.
August 28 is the date of the next monthly meeting of the Friends of RBMSP. Dessert is served at 6:30 during the board meeting, to which everyone is invited. At 7 p.m. the general meeting is held. Terry Trittenhouse of the University of MO department of Biological Sciences with speak on the subject, "Are Missouri Frogs Croaking?" This meeting takes place at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 2515 Shepard Boulevard, across from Shepard Boulevard School.
We hope you will join us at these events. We always have a good time. But, you know, "the more the merrier."
**A note to all members who have information that they would like to be included in the weekly bulletin: Send the information you would like to be included in the bulletin to Mike Hatchett @ m_hatchett@yahoo.com, please send only what you want included and in the form you wish it to appear and the dates you wish it to run through.
PROGRAM: This week’s program was a presentation from Joe Neal who was the winner of the East MO District golf tourney this past June. Joe shared the highlights of his trip along with troubles he had with the airline. He even turned the negative of a canceled flight into a positive by focusing on the positive aspect of getting to see the wonderful city of Miami. Sounds like an Optimist in the making. Thanks Joe for sharing your experience with us.
