GREETER:
Cyrilla Galbreath was today’s greeter; Cyrilla has been involved with the
Downtown Optimist Club off and on for quite some time now and has recently rejoined. We are glad to have you back!
PROGRAM:
Today's program centered around Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Lisa Eimers spoke of the work that they do pairing kids with ‘bigs’ in an effort to provide the kids with a mentor. These mentors help the kids they are paired with to deal with the stresses of being a kid. Nicolle Adair, who works as a coordinator for school based mentoring, told the club about a child who lost a family member and was having a hard time coping with that loss.
Nicole knew the family and called to check up on them and saw an opportunity to help the child out by establishing a mentor for the child that was most devastated by the loss. The mentor and child did so well the other children in the family were also matched with a mentor of their own.
As Optimists these are the kinds of programs we help when we sell Koeze Nuts, when we sell the trees, when we do all that we do.

PROGRAM: The program was “The Hickman Review”. The Hickman Review is a book of poems, artwork and other creative writing that a select group of Hickman High students put together every year. Carol Keinniger is faculty advisor but she consistently passes all praise and credit to the students. This year we heard from Kelsey Brucks who shared with us a writing her sister wrote about her devoted relationship to Michael’s (the craft and so much more store). Truman Shuck shared his writing and pictures of his artwork. The pictures of his work showed how creative and interesting a young adult could be when they are encouraged to express themselves. Kathryn Caldwell also shared some interesting writings with us.
Some of the proceeds from the sales of The Hickman Review are used to provide scholarships. Last year two scholarships were awarded. Kids helping other kids, sounds like an internship for future Optimists.
