Pat Brown called the meeting to order by ringing the bell at 12:20 pm. Max Miller gave the invocation and Garry Spotts led the 36 members in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were no guests. 

The mystery person was Joe Sestak and he awarded the free lunch to Larry Fick who was not attending but who did such a great job of organizing and working the Show Me State Games Soccer Awards. Steve Henderson the Tail twister fined Dottie Parker 25 cents for not having her badge on. Steve had it in his pocket, but Dottie paid the fine anyway. Steve once again shared a few jokes that are better not put into print. 

The announcements for the week were as follows:
· Valerie Goodin brought to the clubs attention that she has forwarded on all the clubs pictures to “ SHUTTERFLY “ and anyone can go on line and review and have the company send them pictures for a slight fee if they desire. The address is downtownoptimistclub.shutterfly.com
· Jess Weaver announced that the shrimp dinner would be August 24th at 6:00pm. The cost is $7.00/person and Steve Henderson will be making lobster bisque as an added treat. We also be having a NOW meeting for prospective new members at 5:30 and then have them join us for dinner. 
· Jess Weaver also announced that the Zoeze Nut fund raiser will begin the 1ST of September. He has ordered the sample jars and encouraged everyone to support the fund raiser. 
· Pat Brown announced that there will be the monthly board meeting August 18th at 7:00pm. There will also be a Holiday Sales meeting at 6:00pm and everyone is welcome to attend. 
· Pat Brown had everyone who worked the Show Me State Soccer Awards to stand and be recognized.
· Pat Brown announced that the Eastern Mo District would be holding their annual convention August 26th and 27th in St Louis. The club would pay for registration for any member wishing to attend. 

This week’s program was presented by Officer Jessica Hayden 12 year veteran with the Columbia Police Department. Jessica spoke about safety during vacations for the summer both at home and on the road. She reminded us how important it was to protect the home while on vacation. She suggested some simple things like, stopping the mail and paper service. Having lights on timers and parking someone’s car in the driveway. Having someone to mow the grass or shovel the snow. Turn the ringer off on the phone was another suggestion. Checking doors and windows to make sure they are locked securely and keeping hedges trimmed to eliminate hiding spots. 
She spent the second half of her presentation on what safety features to incorporate while on the road. She recommended making sure that you had a spare, some fix a flat, and an additional 1 gal can of gas. Try to know the emergency number like # 55 for cell phone and 911 for regular phones

Pat Brown closed the meeting at 1:00 with the membership reciting the Optimist Creed.

Rick McKernan called the meeting to order, in place of the vacationing Pat Brown, by ringing the bill at 12:20pm Jay Ketchie gave the invocation and Chuck Boots led the 43 members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roger Roberts was a guest of Chuck Boots. Roger works with Chuck and Chuck said it took some doing to get Roger to come. Buck Rickli brought his daughter Barbara Clark who is from San Antonio, Texas. 

The mystery person was Ellis Havard and since it was the eight day of the eight month, and the cardinals scored 8 runs on Sunday he gave next week’s free lunch to Bo Bossaller. Steve Henderson the tail twister thought the pig was hungry and he fined Valerie Goodin and Kerry Bramon for not wearing their name badges. Steve proceeded to tell a few jokes and I would be glad to share them except I do not write that slowwww.

The announcements for the week were as follows
· Rick McKernan invited anyone that wanted to go Centralia tonight would be welcome. Rick continues on the clubs behalf to get a club started in Centralia.
· Jess Weaver again reminded everyone of the club Shrimp Dinner, august 24th at 6:00pm and that there would be a Now new member meeting at 5:30 the all club members are encouraged to bring a prospective new member.
· Bo Bossaller sporting a burgundy alpine hiking hat let club members know that there were plenty of “just ask “buttons and other membership tools at the back of the room. 

This week’s program was presented by Cherie Diemler of the Girl Scouts, Heart of Missouri Council. She talked about all the things that girls scouts do besides selling cookies. The council also interacts with, The Intersection, Fun City, Lunch in the Park, Fun Square, Boys and Girls Club, Butterfield Youth. 
The Council was also having a golf tournament August 22 at Columbia Country Club. The will be an 8:00 am shotgun Start and also a 1:00pm start. Lunch, adult beverages and a cart will be provided. LC Betz has a $10,000 worth of merchandise as a hole in one prize. There will also be a silent auction with lots of fun prizes.
The council has a $10 membership fee and scholarships available. A vest runs $20 and there are scholarships for those as well.

Rick McKernan called the meeting to order, in place of the vacationing Pat Brown, by ringing the bell at 12:20pm. Connie Howe gave the invocation and Steve Winters led the 37members in the pledge of Allegiance. 

Bob Merriman was the mystery person and he awarded the free lunch next week to Jim Beckett. Steve Henderson the tail twister and chef de unusual went over the menu for the club dinner next Wednesday. Shrimp, Crab Dip, Lobster Bisque, Jess’s Home Fries, Cole Slaw, Deviled Eggs with Caviar and Ice Cream and Brownies for Dessert, Ice tea and Coffee, and some bring your own cooler liquids. Dottie Stoerker-Peters passed around a card for Marilynn Bohanon who is moving to Colorado to be closer to family and Dottie will be taking over the fellowship duties in her place.

The announcements for the week were as follows:

· Max Miller reinforced Steve Henderson in that there was still time to sign up for the Shrimp Dinner on August 24th, 6:00 pm, at the clubhouse. It is $7 per person and can be paid at the door. There will be a NOW meeting for new members at 5:30pm.
· There is the annual Eastern Mo District meeting Aug 26-27 in St Louis. You can see Pat Brown if you would like to attend. 

This week’s program was presented by Danita Woods of Fayette, Mo, owner and publisher of “Missouri Life” magazine. Danita grew up on a dairy farm down around Clinton, Mo. She was one of 5 girls in the family and described the hard work of growing up on a dairy farm. 

She came to J-school to earn a degree in journalism and her first job was working for the Merideth Corp and ran a magazine entitled “Successful Farming”. Her second magazine was a cross between country music and country life style’ “Country America”. It grew to 1 million in circulation and was voted in the top five magazines in 1991. The magazine had a 2 million dollar budget and 17 full time employees. In 1995 she decided to come back to Missouri and teach at the J-school. She worked on the 3 student magazines, which had a staff that turned over every 16 weeks and a zero budget. She made an offer to buy the “Missouri Life “magazine in 1999. She made note that new magazines have a 50% failure rate the first year and that only 30% make it to the second year. The magazine now has 12,000 subscribers. Danita had free samples of the magazine for anyone that was interested.

Pat Brown called the meeting to order by ringing the bell at 12:17pm. Bo Bossaller gave the invocation and Spence Turner led the 43 member in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jess Weaver was the mystery person and he awarded the free lunch to Steve Henderson in appreciation of all that he was doing for the Shrimp Dinner. Steve Henderson the Tail Twister told a joke that Bo had heard that all accidents occur 25 miles from home so he moved. It was just as bad in person. On a note of fellowship Pat Brown expressed his condolences to John Sapp who recently lost his father. Dottie let the club know that if there was anyone who has not been coming to the meetings that she would write them a note, please let Dottie know. Bo reminded everyone to wear their “Just Ask “buttons to help membership. 

The announcements for the week were as follows:

· Dottie Stoeker-Parker invited everyone to The Friends of Rock Bridge meeting Tuesday, August 23 at the Pasta Factory. Jan Weaver will be the guest speaker.
· Jess Weaver reminded everyone of the Shrimp Dinner Wednesday, August 24th, 6:30 pm at the Clubhouse. 
· Jess Weaver told everyone to get ready for the Koeze nut campaign scheduled to kick off in September.
· Connie Howe announced that Denise Parker would be taking over for him in October for scheduling the volunteers on the first Wednesday of the month at the Central Mo Food Bank.
· Pat Brown reminded everyone that there is an Eastern Mo Optimist District Annual Convention August 26-27 in St Louis.
· Pat Brown informed the club that Dean Rapp had resigned as secretary of the club.
· Pat Brown reminded everyone that there will be a tree lot meeting before the next board meeting September 15, 2005.
· Pat Brown announced that the club had dropped 33 members who had not paid there dues for 2004-2005.
· Pat Brown announced that the board had voted to present $2000 to The Friends of Rock Bridge.
This week’s program was presented by Dennis Diederich, who is the Director of Admissions at Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Mo. Dennis has been with MMA for 8 years after finishing a 30 year career with A. P Green Industries. At A. P. Green Dennis was the plant accounting manager in Fulton for 17 years and 13 years he handled various corporate functions at the Mexico plant. He holds the rank of major in the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Program). Dennis is also ve4ry active in the Boy Scouts and is currently the District Advancement Chairman for the Grand Prairie District and is an Eagle Scout. His wife Kathy has worked at Missouri military Academy for 28 years and is currently the assistant to the President. 

The mission of the Missouri Military Academy is to prepare boys for after high school. The Cadets use to graduate with the rank of 2nd Lt before the 1960’s. The school is located on 288 acres today, with 19 buildings and is valued at 40 million dollars. There is about 200 high school boy’s grade 9-12 and 80 boys in 7th and 8th grade. One third of all the students are from foreign countries, with South America leading the way followed by Korea. The boys are taught to look like a soldier, act like a gentleman, and study like a scholar. The grades consist of 12 grading points with final exams accounting for only 1/12 of the final grade. Study hall in mandatory for all boys, 2 hrs a night, five nights a week. They compete in the following sports: football, soccer, cross country, basketball, wrestling, swimming and diving, tennis, baseball, track, and riflery. Tuition is around $25,000 a year with 20% of the students receiving some form of financial aid. The Academy is also home of the “Miss Missouri Pageant” each year.

Pat Brown called the meeting to order by ringing the bell at 12:16 PM. Dottie Stoeker-Parker gave the invocation and Garry Spotts led the 46 members in attendance with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bo Bossaler was the mystery person and he awarded next meetings free lunch to Wes Brown. 
*Steve Popaveli was the guest of Pat Brown. Steve is going to fill out a membership application and join the club. 
*John Harre was guest of his parents Ed and Valerie Harre. John spent most of the meeting in the arms on his grandfather Larry Fick. 
*Dottie Stoeker-parker made note that Brenda Gibbs-Brown was having a birthday. Bob Merriman was recovering from recent rotor-cuff surgery and was out of the hospital. 
*The tail twister Steve Henderson fined Christine White 25 cents for not wearing her name badge. He also awarded Denise Payne a free movie ticket for having to put up with his raffle at the Shrimp Dinner. 
*Bo made an announcement that we dropped 33 members in July and that we have only gained 23 members all year. Bo stated that this well hurt us on fundraising and the tree lot and to start asking people to lunch. 

The announcement of the week was as follows:

*Pat Brown announced that there would be no lunch 9/5/05 due to the Labor Day holiday.
*Rick McKernan stated that we are going to have to Optimist International new club recruiters to Centralia after lunch on 9/12 and Tuesday 9/13. Rick wanted other club members to join them. 
*Jess Weaver reported that we will kick off the Koeze nut campaign 9/19 with a Koeze nut program. 

This week’s program was presented by Karen Anderson who represents the Foster Parent Association in Boone County. Karen stated that she has children of her own and it teaches everyone to share. They adopted a child with Down Syndrome. The pledge of foster parents is Helping-hurting-hearts-heal. In 2004 there were 214 children that were placed in Foster Homes in Boone County. The reason that Division of Family Service places children in Foster Homes is because the biological parents either neglect, abuse or fail to protect the children. 

With the recent budget cuts the local Association is looking for the following.
1) space or homes for children
2) Hygiene kits
3) Funds
4) More foster parents
5) School supplies 
6) Permanent duffle bags or suitcases

Pat Brown closed the meeting with the Optimist Creed at 1:00.
