PROGRAM CARRIE GARTNER “ THE DISTRICT”

Carrie Gartner from the Columbia Special Business District was gracious enough to join us for a session to discuss “The District.”  Her office is essentially an economic development office.  They are working on several projects at the current time.
*Placing downtown Columbia on the National Register of Historic Places.
*New benches, signage, light fixtures, pedestrian friendly lights, and more are on the 5-6 year plan. Looking into the market. Steady growth in past five years people moving from other places for the attractions of Columbia.
“The District”.  A “more fun… more hip” title.  Focus more on entertainment. Downtown canopies to be replaced by canvas.  Stores have to pay for this canvas.  That may also allow them to be places on the National Register.  As it stands, Broadway businesses may not be placed there due to the concrete canopy.
*Upcoming event:  June 3rd, Lewis & Clark at Flat Branch Park.  This event is geared toward kids as well as adults.
A Day With Wildlife is being held on Sunday, April 4th, from Noon until 5PM.  This is at the American Legion Post 202, east of Hwy 63S on Route WW.  This is a free event for the family.  Please come and show support.

PROGRAM: SHILOH JORDAN UMC JUMPSTART VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

The purpose of this program is to help those preschools who meet the financial guidelines set forth by Jumpstart to boost early childhood development and learning.  This program utilizes 37 undergraduate students at MU who qualify for work study.  These students will work in one-on-one sessions with children from three different preschools.  At this point, Nora Stewart Nursery, Hand in Hand, and Park Ave. are the schools in the program.  It is possible that next year there may be six schools involved.  Students put in 6-12 hours a week working with the children.

There will be two clean up/spruce up sessions.  One in late March, there will be some painting taking place, and on April 17th, there will be outdoor planting and such at all three sites.  In May, there will also be a Celebrity Readathon at B&N.
