GREETER: Meredith Donaldson was our cheerful greeter on this wonderful afternoon.
PROGRAM  :  Dr. Saba Jalali  spoke on the environmental factors that affect  the health of our eyes,  such as dry eyes, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration..
On a more serious note for the Bulletin, it was my pleasure to get a quick education from Columbia grown Dr. Saba Jalali.  Take a look at the supermarket and just look how easy it is to avoid Glaucoma, Cataracts, and Macular Degeneration!  Every time you eat some spinach, or choke down some brussel sprouts, you are helping your eyes a little.  Instead of rubbing those tired eyes, why not just get a nice, relaxing glass of water.  Not only will this avoid unnecessary irritating of the eyes, but it will also help to increase the amount of fluid in the blood, therefore helping the eyes out even more.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - I would like to take this time to make an informal introduction about me.  I hope to add a lot of spice to the Bulletin.  I have been a writer for a college newspaper, and written numerous papers, studies, and a great deal of other “stuff” in my short time here.  If anyone has something they would like for me to add to the Bulletin, just send me an email or give me a call.
Respectfully,
James N. Henderson

PROGRAM  :  BILL LOYD RAINBOW HOUSE:

Let me start off by saying that the Rainbow House is truly one of Columbia’s greatest assets.  I became familiar with it during my time with United Way, in 2002.  As a Loaned Executive, we had the opportunity to tour Rainbow House.  I was absolutely stunned.  I am a former police officer, and the jurisdiction I was in had nothing like this.  A place for kids that are in need of help, and open hearts that have no bounds.  We spoke with Sharon Tepper, who gave depthless insight into what really goes on.
Mr. Lloyd could not begin to tell us, in such a short time, all of the ways that children are touched.  Not only do they have shelter for the necessary time, but they also have food.  Some of these children are confused by having cereal and milk for breakfast.  They don’t know what it is like to set down, and eat a dinner together.
The Child Advocacy Center is located across the street.  This is a facility where those children who have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse can be examined, treated, and interviewed by proper authorities to have their abuse stopped.  There are several rooms for exams and interviews.  Children are made as comfortable as possible and only talk to one or two people.  Others who need the information are able to set in on the interview unobtrusively from another room, able to obtain all they need.
At this point in time, the Rainbow house is too old, out of spec, and in serious need of help.  They are attempting to build a new building that can house both the Rainbow house and the CAC.  This will help to ease the minds of the children, increase the safety, and allow the Rainbow house to help more of the children that are in dire need.  I have seen the effects of not helping these kids.  This facility changes lives.  This facility can save lives.

GREETER_Julie Bueler from Head Start was all smiles while greeting this beautiful Monday.

PROGRAM :
MAUREEN PETERS WITH VA HOSPITAL/NATIONAL GUARD EXPERIENCE IN IRAQ CONFLICT

Monday’s presentation was a new insight into the conflict in Iraq.  It is not everyday that we, as civilians, have the opportunity to see what is really going on overseas.
As JC and Maureen begin explaining their orders, roles, and posts, we begin to see a picture of the circumstances that they may be involved with.  Patients in and out by the thousand and the constant threat of BioChem warfare piled into a seven day work week, 12-16 hours a day.  Sand storms, heat, and constant threat, graciously, there were no complaints about serving our Nation in these times.  Showing some great slides of the area and situations, we can only fathom the depth of impact that our medical companies make in those surroundings.  From helping our soldiers, to helping guard dogs, they can do it all.  As the most well equipped medical outfit and most versatile military in the World, it is with great honor that we support our troops.
