Invocation  =  Larry Fick     Pledge =  Roy Robinson      Attendance = 64
GUESTS:  Steve Hudson brought his girlfriend, Jessica.
Prez Valerie brought her husband, Richard and her friend, Anthony Wilson.
TAIL TWISTER:  Steve Henderson (always a mystery!) said that the W.O.W. for this week is
‘stupid’ and he said something about his refrigerator had a note on it about how a man can be
stupid for 15 minutes, and any time after 15 minutes is unreasonable (?) … Not quite sure, but
maybe that’s why Steve usually talks for less that 15 minutes?!?
And … he reminded us that this Sunday, May 11th is Mother’s Day, so be sure recognize our
mothers and wives and daughters who are mothers, on their special day.
GREETER:   Julie Cupp had to undergo the grueling task of having her picture taken (she doesn’t
like pictures of herself, which many of us CAN relate to!), while telling a little bit about herself.
She is the Marketing Director of Tiger Columns, which is for people 50 or older.  She has a 6 ½ year
old son and 8-½ year old daughter and talked a little about each, and about the towns/states she and
her husband have lived in.  Her favorite color is “anything but gray”.

Officer John Warner. This would also be a great meeting for you to bring a young person.
PROGRAM:  Jim Harmon introduced the program, Juvenile Law.  This is the first of a three-part
series in our Respect for Law series. Jim gave a historical account of how Juvenile Law evolved
from old English laws to early 1800’s and 1900’s through this current century.
He introduced Detective Maurice Tapp of the Columbia Police Department.  He is the Juvenile Detective
of Youth Services, the only one who handles over 160 cases each year!  For some perspective, the
Master Crimes Detectives each work on around 70 cases per year.  There is hope that help is on the
way for Detective Tapp!  Detective Tapp is also Vice President of Douglas Athletic Association, and
has been active in many youth services over the years.
Sergeant Diane Bernhardt (his boss) and Captain Moon McCrary were also present to offer their praise and
support of Detective Tapp.  Detective Tapp was presented with the Club’s Respect for Law Award, with a
standing ovation from members, and a thank you from President Valerie Goodin.

Chief, Randy Boehm. This would also be a great meeting for you to bring a young person.

PROGRAM:  Jim Harmon introduced this week’s program, the second in a three part series “Respect
for Law”.  This week’s topic is on ‘preventive measures’, specifically the D.A.R.E. Program.  Jim introduced
Officer John Warner
who is a trained and certified D.A.R.E. Instructor.  John has been in the Columbia
Police Dept since 1987, and became certified and started teaching in 1989.  He teaches the D.A.R.E.
Program to area 5th graders.  The 5th graders are ending their elementary school years and moving on to
middle school that has much more freedoms.
They know that drugs are a bad thing, but they don’t know why.  D.A.R.E. Program tries to teach them
how drug use would affect them now, since ‘the future’ is a concept they cannot relate to.  John says
that the “real secret” of the D.A.R.E. Program is to teach kids “how you make decisions for yourself”.
It teaches them how to decide what’s good for them and what’s bad for them and how this will affect
them, their families and their community. D.A.R.E. concentrates on educating youth about Alcohol,
Tobacco and Marijuana -the most prevalent drugs they’ll be exposed to. John also mentioned that there
is a “second layer’ to the program, the Police officer in the classroom!  It gives youth a chance to interact
with police officers and to see them as real people.
John then answered many questions from the audience and was presented with an OI plaque by Prez Valerie.

We closed with the creed at 1:00 pm.
