he has personally visited each of the 50 states! Glad you are with us in this State now, Pete!
PROGRAM
Roger Gafke,
Professor Emeritus from the School of Journalism is the director of
Humphrey Fellows Program for Mizzou. He introduced our guest speaker, Rojee
[pronounced “Row-G”] Kattel, a Humphrey Fellow from Nepal.
Rojee gave an overview of the political scene in Nepal.
Now is a dangerous time for her countrymen. Terrorists have a
powerful effect in this small country, nestled between India and China.
Fifty-one percent of the people are women and the cultural norm is not to
educate women. Added to this is the fact that 60% of the people are
illiterate. Terrorists are targeting educators and journalists who bring
the true story to the people and teach reading. Terrorists fear education,
so they are striking educators, sometimes killing them right in front of
the young children who are in their classes.
As a journalist both Rojee and her
husband work for the Nepal television, which is government owned. She too
has been targeted, having once been locked into her own home by terrorists
and threatened. In Nepal
Rojee has worked as a teacher, journalist and advocate for women.
As a married woman, she has “bucked the
system.” It was
expected that when she married, she and her husband would move into his
mother’s home, where Rojee would do the cleaning and laundry for all 14
family members. This she did not do, with the loving support of her
husband, who also represents a changing male role model. Rojee answered questions from Club members and was presented
with an Optimist pen as a ‘Thank you.’

On a note of Optimism:
Our
drippy President Valerie (drippy because her eyes have a
“tendency to leak”) shared this with us: Starting
Tampa Bay linebacker Shelton
Quarles admits that playing in the Super Bowl has been a
lifelong dream for him. "But ..." he continues, "as
much as I desire to be a Super Bowl champion, it pales in comparison to my
desire to be a super husband and father -- to be a part of something that
is truly lasting. I love my wife Damaris more than life itself.... And my
son and daughter bring me greater happiness than any football victory ever
could. "…Family comes first for me. My family is an investment that
will never lose its value; …. Too often … we get caught up in
temporary success and neglect those things that will last. I'd love to
pass a Super Bowl ring on to my children one day …, but more importantly
I want to leave them a legacy of love, honor, character and
commitment."
Prez
Valerie then showed us
her ‘Super Bowl costume’. You
had to be there to appreciate it $$!
