PROGRAM
It
is time to sell Koeze Nuts. Jess
Weaver explained that the profit from Koeze Nuts sales is one of our
most important fundraisers. Last
year we netted $30,000 for the club to use to support programs in our
community. Red
Leighton has plenty of suggestions to increase sales. We began selling the nuts and puddles 14 years ago.
We sold only $12,000 the first year.
Our goal is to sell $105,000 this year.
**Valerie
Goodin made
a presentation about the Optimist Computer Lab.
Through the mentoring experience, Brian Hudspeth, a mentor, put the
idea of providing computers together with the “needed population” and
the Board accepted his proposal to purchase computers and create a
computer lab for students to use for school projects and to develop
resumes for job opportunities.
To staff a Lab properly,
without jeopardizing our insurance, we need to have many trained members
who can give time in the lab, when the kids need to use it.
So the project for students has been expanded to include our Club
members, FIRST. A Computer
Lab Committee of 6 members oversees the project.
Equipment,
furniture, computers, painting, scanners, carpet, window shades, wiring
plumbing and cleaning have all been donated through the Committee’s
efforts. The Lab is two rooms
on the west side of the second story – called the North Lab and South
Lab. Each has had new carpet and, when ready, will each hold 2 computer
workstations.
The
Lab will be open by appointment only, 4 days a week, beginning Sept. 23rd.
We are scheduling two shifts each of the four days. One will be 2 ½ hours
from, 2 – 4:30 pm and the other will be in the evening, 6 – 8:30 pm.
That means each day the Lab is fully staffed, 8 people will be able
to use the computers.
We
will be covering some of the basics of Windows and how to prepare a Word
document. That could be a letter, report, resume, story, etc. For this we
will provide information you can use to develop your skills OR you may
bring your own work. Having a work project is a requirement for using the
Lab.
