GREETER
After nearly 40 years with the club, Jim Beckett was finally the greeter for the first time.  He came to MU in 1955 and has stayed in Columbia except for a brief period of employment in St. Louis.  He told his favorite tree lot story;  as he and other Optimists closed the tree lot on Christmas Eve, 1962, one final customer desperately wanted a tree.  They found two poorly shaped Douglas fir trees, cut the bottom off of one, the top off the other, drilled and pinned the trunks and sold her a mix & match tree.
PROGRAM
Travis Scott introduced Christy Theranos who is inviting all Columbians to participate in  "A Week in the Life of Columbia" Photo Project.  Starting at 12:00 A.M. on September 21, 2002 through Midnight September 28, 2002, residents of Columbia, professional photographers and children are invited to strive to capture on film nothing more or less than the daily life in
Columbia, Missouri.  She is not seeking merely newsworthy events or prominent people of the community, but rather the incredible daily visual images that surround us.  The photographic documents collected will be a part of a contest and gallery showing at the Historic Missouri Theater in December.  She hopes we will participate and believes we will be fascinated with what we discover about Columbia. We may also pick up details and entry forms at Columbia Photo, The Colosseum Bistro, The Historic Missouri Theater, or Will- B-Free Adventure Company starting September 1st, 2002.   For more information or for a printable version of the entry form and release, visit the link on the website, www.downtowncolumbia.org  starting August 26th.

TAIL TWISTER
Steve Henderson fined Bo Bossaller for some reason.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Valerie Goodin talked about the NOW meeting to be held next week.  NOW stands for New Optimists Wanted.  She encourages everyone to contact any guests they have invited in the last year and bring them to next week's meeting.  The program will include interesting information about the Downtown Optimist Club and the presentation of the Optimist Community Service Award to Tom and Linda Atkins.  Special speakers will include Dave Griggs, Don Laird, and Dr. Gerald Brouder.
*Red Leighton has tickets for the Club Out Hunger luncheon to be held this Friday at the Hearnes Center.  Lunch is $7.50 and there are pledge cards available to make donations to the Central MO Food Bank.
*Garry Spotts announced that we have 31 new members so far this year.  He also asked members to help gather information and background history on members who will be honored on the "In Memory Of" page on our website.
*There have been a few complaints about parking at Columbia College.  The board considered a proposal by the Ramada Inn to host our weekly meetings and did not view it as a good alternative.  With no other alternatives to present, a vote was taken and the members overwhelmingly approved staying at Dulany Hall.
GREETER
Buck Rikli was our greeter today..  He started his medical career with the US Public Health Service.  After 25 years, he moved to Columbia in 1968 to accept a professorship at MU.  His son inquired that for 25 years he had been a doctor with no patients, was he going to be a professor with no students?
PROGRAM
Susan Kreklow and Melissa Everitt from MU women's volleyball gave us a presentation about their program.  They started with door prizes.  T-shirts went to Lili Vianello and Tony Aulisa who are celebrating birthdays this week.  Autographed volleyballs went to Red Leighton and Kevin Roberson who answered questions about the volleyball program.  Together with her husband, Wayne, Coach Kreklow encourages the scholar-athletes in their program to have a balance that includes classroom work, participation in their sport and community service.  The young women are positive role models and will be participating in intramural volleyball programs with 4th and 5th grade students in the Columbia Public Elementary Schools.  They also participate with coed Junior High programs since organized volleyball is not available in the public schools until the 9th grade.  The women's volleyball team is a "Partner in Education" with Smithton Middle School.  It is Coach Kreklow's goal to develop a volleyball program at MU that is nationally competitive for years to come.

PROGRAM
We had a very special program today to present Linda and Tom Atkins with our Community Service Award.  Three prominent members of our community explained their achievements and contributions.
Dr. Gerald Brouder, President of Columbia College, noted that Linda Atkins is a graduate of (Christian) Columbia College and Tom Atkins has served on the Board of Trustees for 25 years, 17 years as the chairman.  They have given to Columbia College and the city of Columbia in many ways.  They are the true embodiment of altruism.
Don Laird, Executive Director of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged the many Atkins family businesses that have contributed to the success and prosperity of Columbia and Boone County.  Tom Atkins is a past president of the chamber.
Dave Griggs, a 30-year member and past president of the DOC and a business leader in our community expressed his appreciation for the Atkins’ interest in the youth in our community.  He specifically acknowledged their donation of land near the Boone County Fairgrounds and their involvement that helped the Fair Board to continue to put on the Boone Co. Fair. The families of both Tom and Linda have a long history in Columbia and Boone County.
Garry Spotts presented Linda and Tom Atkins the Community Service Award.  Their hope is that groups like ours will work with the city and county to make the fairgrounds area a premier recreational facility.
NOW – New Optimists Wanted
Valerie Goodin continued the program with an outstanding presentation about the Downtown Optimist Club, our programs, and the value of membership.  Every active Optimist serves 31 young people in our community.  We want to recruit new members at every opportunity to continue the valuable work being accomplished by the Downtown Optimist Club. Garry Spotts led us in reciting the Creed.
